Frequently Asked Questions

The domain of the work is performing Abrasion Arthroplasty (AA) and high tibial osteotomy (HTO) as an alternative procedure to TRK (total knee replacement).

Give me your advice: should I do AA+HTO or should I go to TRK from the beginning?

AA and HTO relieves knee pain due to osteoarthritis (night pain, rest pain and pain on start of motion) in 95% of cases TRK will relieve your pain, but the mechanisms for loosening of the prosthesis are activated from the moment of insertion. Delay of TRK is always desirable. More over AA+HTO do not burn the bridge to the one way - no return TRK operation.

How many years do you expect I will be pain-free after AA+HTO?

We have many cases in which patients are still pain-free after 10 years of surgery.

Who is the best candidate for the operation?

The patient with unicompartmental osteoarthritis and intact lateral compartment.

What is the success rate?

Pain disappears and excellent results can be obtained in 86% of patients.

When pain disappears after surgery?

In the first postoperative night.

How long does rehabilitation program takes?

4 weeks of non weight bearing and continuous passive motion exercise, to allow formation of the clot that contains stem cells and the conversion of the stem cells to chondrocyte like cells.

What will I loose if the operation fails?

Nothing, you still can go for TRK without nay extra risk.

Could AA+HTO be repeated in the same knee?

AA can be repeated if pain recurred, but for HTO it depends on some factors as the agulation and the condition of the lateral tibial plateau cartilage.

Anterior cruciate reconstruction

My knee is unstable after ACL injury, I cannot run or play my favourite sport, will my knee be stable after ACA reconstruction?

Yes, after adopting the quadriloop technique, the knee becomes stable enough for football and intensive sport activity.

When can I return to sport activity after operation?

Running can be started after 3 month, professional contact sports need 12 month of rehabilitation.

My ACL ruptured 10 years ago, could I still benefit from the operation?

A knee without ACL is subject to osteoarthritis faster than the normal knee, this is because of the instability and giving way that leads to meniscal tear and cartilage damage. Giving way may occur and you do not feel it at all and still leads to the same devastating effect on the meniscus and the cartilage.
